Hi all I was cruising ebay when I came across a listing in which the seller says that he owns the coin, but that APMEX IS TRYING TO SELL THE VERY SAME COIN. here is the ebay listing... https://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-PCGS-...em2ccfbbef6eso natuarally, I go over to APMEX to see if this is true and came across this listing... https://www.apmex.com/product/65111...first-strikeyep, it appears to be the same coin, serial numbers match. any thoughts? It would seem weird that APMEX would tarnish their reputation by trying to sell (or substitute) a coin which happens to be very expensive. Perhaps it was sold to this or another guy but never removed from the APMEX database is my most optimistic thought. But even so, if that is the case, it would appear that someone at APMEX dropped the ball. I will message the seller and see when and who he bought it from. It's just that I have never seen this before, and I will not pass a snap judgement until the facts are in. The thing is that the seller says nothing about buying it from APMEX beforehand and accuses them of fraud. ? if I am missing something here, please let me know. mike

one thing that occurred to me is that APMEX is using the picture as a "stock" photo, like many, including me, sometimes do. But I would always say that such and such picture is a stock photo (a lot of times they look so much better than mine), or I say this pictured coin is the exact coin you will receive. I have delt with APMEX many times before. I'm not saying I smell a rat anyplace. The seller has 100% positive feedback. Will let you know what the seller says when I get it... mike

AMPEX says on their site that they are not offering the coin shown -- it's a stock photo. I'm betting they did own it at one point and they still use the picture.
Edit to clarify: The "stock photo" notification appears if you hover over the little camera at lower-right of the image.

oh, ok, I saw that when I hovered over the camera. still, I think that APMEX should spell it out in a little more obvious way that it is not the actual coin for sale, but that is just my opinion. all I know that if I had bought it and had not hovered over the little camera and read that, and then got a different coin, I would be like huh? To sell like this, the buyer has not the ability to research the coin in the database without the number, which is part of the fun. not fair, in my opinion. thanks for telling me that tho, I have bought lots of stuff from APMEX and never had to deal with that "hovering over that little camera" thing. I collect 2012-P Australia dragons and the listing got my attention. Sincerely... mike

I agree -- it's not very well disclosed. It's something I look for in cases like this, and only discovered it when I was comparing to other offerings/images on their site. Makes me wonder what the experience is like on a phone -- how would someone know, when "hover" doesn't really exist? (I may check that out later.)

I once had another seller on ebay use my photo to sell their coin. Nothing surprises me about ebay.

Dealers will sometimes make deals with each other where they can offer each others inventory so it isn't that unusual to see the same coin offered in different places. In cases like this where multiple are available its almost always just a stock photo type thing

I was shocked when I got this reply from APMEX about my inquiry for better photos. Using a stock photo for individual coins is against ebay policy. We all know ebay omly cares about their policy when it benefits themselves. from APMEX: "Thank you for contacting APMEX. We have updated the listing with additional images. Please note that due to our large inventory as well as typically having multiples for listings, we use stock photos taken by our photography team. The coin received will match the quality and specifications of the coin shown, but will not be the exact coin. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. "
