These are pretty cool but I cannot find them anywhere. Possible FS-901. Both have extra material next to designers initials, doubling of initials and the date may be more elsewhere. Both have same die crack running from bottom of front hair to bottom of bust. Anyone seen this one before? Just ignore the staple scrape on the obverse. made me ban staples from my sets.

There are a couple of different obverse dies with a crack in that area one of them being the FS-901. I'm off to work at the moment but I'll compare to the images I have this evening.

Here are two more in this series that are very similar. Notice the foreign chunk next to the initials is still there but is fading. Also to the NW of "IN" there is a bunch of die scratches and another big hunk of foreign material that also fades out through the series. These dimes are coming out of a set of 220 dimes I bought at an auction. I believe they are die change series showing the difference after making changes to the dies. Maybe collected by a mint employee back in the day of minting. I have others in series before and after major Double die incidents, like 1939-P, and 1939-D the 1942-P and also Roosevelts of the early series. Let me know if they interest you and or if you can recommend someone to attribute these. I truly believe I have a rather unique and special collection.
regards
Paul

I've cataloged around 10 1940-S obverse dies in my collection based on unique die cracks and several more with re-punched dates and I only have a small fraction of the RPD's listed on the Wexler site. 1940-S become an obsession for me a couple of years ago. I'll post up what I have later this evening.(still at work)

Your first pic is the FS-901 right? And yes your second one looks very similar to my second post first pic. Same double die cracks on the bust but mine split out on the cap one goes straight up to the rim the other curves around to the R and a light one to the T. doesn't have the doubling in the motto like the FS-901. Still cool dimes. What do you think the extra material is next to the initials? My second post looks like the same material under the initials. Does your have that as well under the initials? They were struggling to get it right. I wonder what they did to the dies as these all progressed. How do you get such good close ups without a microscope? Thanks for your time.

My impression of your first images, "twins" is the curled line under the 9 is a clash artifact and the mark near the designer initials being on both examples must be as well. My stage B examples do not have these as a mint worker must have polished the heck out of the die to remove the clash marks and the die crack leaving the gouges at the bottom of the bust. From what I can tell from all the examples I have from 1940-S is they didn't have enough dies to produce what they needed to and really stretched the die life.

My photog set-up is this, a Canon body mounted on a bellows using various enlarging lensesCongratulations-Twins-1940-S-Mercury-Dimes-With-Twin-Mint-Errors.
