What do you make of this? Is it rare? Valuable?

I don't think it's a mint error. It was just exposed to a lot of heat that melted the coin after it had already left the mint. So I'd say PMD but others may have differing opinions

To think that poor thing used to be a bright, shiny penny. Looks like it has suffered massive environmental damage. Maybe by being soaked in a vat of acid for several years. If it came from the mint like this, I could never imagine how it got that way.

I tend to agree but the color seems normal for a circulated coin...weird...

It has been heated, not a mint error. It is best to remove coins from whatever holder they are in before taking photos whenever possible.

People try to make up error coins and when they fail. What do they do with the coin? Spend it, and they show up here.
