I found out this evening that Pieter Anne van't Haaff, author of the Catalogue of Elymaean Coinage, passed away on December 8th.

Although I had only limited correspondence with him through the years, Pieter Anne seemed to me to be a very kind and supportive man, and a remarkable numismatist. I am grateful to him for his help in my own research and for inspiring my interest in Elymaean coins. I am pleased to own five plate coins from his book. I believe these were all part of his personal collection.

Below are excerpts from two emails he sent me last year. I truly hope that the book he mentions, that he had been working on, is published:

"Good afternoon Robert, Nice to hear from you after many years. Hope all is well. I am fine and waiting for CNG to publish the catalogue I wrote with Scott VanHorn of CNG as co-author in the coming months."

(I wrote him back asking for more info since he failed to mention the topic of the catalogue - his reply is below):

"Good evening, The catalogus I mentioned is about Persis. I think it will be covering all coinage, including the very early. Will keep you updated."

Here is Pieter Anne's bio from the book on Elymaeans:

I had been thinking the exact same thing. Yes this is a loss, but thanks for letting us know.

Am reviving this thread to pose a question for Bob (or anyone else!) on Mr. van't Haaff's book on Persis. I think when the thread began it had not been published yet, but it is now available on the CNG website.

As I understand, his approximate dating of the early coins departs strongly from earlier works by Alram and Wiesehofer, but aligns with Museler (who also wrote the Preface).
Specifically, van't Haaff puts the Frataraka dynasty between 280 - 220 B.C., with this ruler sequence:
Baydad (Bagdates) 1st reign
Ardaxsir (Artaxerxes) I
Baydad 2d reign
Vahbarz (Oborzos)
Vadfradad (Autophradates) I

I was curious if his insights/scholarship are now the accepted wisdom in ancient nuismatic circles on Persis chronology, or if it's still more "the jury is out?"
