My two best guesses are a die dent (mishandling of the die) or die attrition from striking the collar.

Spruette - I see what you mean... I had not seen this before.

I came across Peripheral Die Damage on ErrorRef.com.

One example was: Loss of the outer portion of the field and its replacement by an incuse area of die damage. This curved groove is an unusual (but by no means unique) form of die damage and implies the presence of a thin burr extending down from the damaged portion of the die. It would be similar to the burr you get when you file down a piece of metal.

Yes... the burr theory make the most sense THANKS!

I assume there is no added value though... but still interesting to figure out what it was from.

I think it's Peripheral Die Damage rather than being struck through a rim burr.
