to the community! It looks like it was damaged and cleaned on the reverse. Almost like someone dripped metal on it

Quote: Almost like someone dripped metal on it I agree. It does look like that. The coloring could be due to the possibility that someone got the coin really hot so the foreign metal on it would flow.

To the CCF Looks like glue to me. Try soaking it in acetone for a day or so and see if it comes of. Other than that, a nice looking Wheat cent.

Thank U for your replies. It almost looks like gold, but ok I will try the acetone and see what happens. Thanks again!! I have one other 1947 penny that looks so shiny I swear it's a proof. Not sure how it got this way because I know they didnt make proof coins then.

to CCF. Proof is a method of minting not a grade or condition. Special dies are used and special planchets as well as more tonnage. A proof also gets two or more strikes on each coin. John1

Make another thread and post photos of the 1947 coin you mentioned. I concur, it looks like glue or epoxy.

Proof cents started in 1936. Matte proof coins were from 1909-1916.

Those are great photos. Did you use 100% pure acetone or was it nail polish remover? How long of a soak? John1
