These are the way I got them. Looks to me like he probably wiped them off with a cloth, probably under running water.

I go VG details, too. So many of the lower grades in this series have been harshly cleaned (hairline scratches). Many times the TPGs seem to find this acceptable; however, this one appears to have deep scratches and they also contrast with the toning, which makes them more noticeable.
