This one is beyond the scope of my normal geographical collecting area but I'm a gold lover so I bought it anyway. The medal and brooch is 10 k gold. The brooch is marked 10k but the medal as far as I can see is not; however there can be no doubt that the medal is at least 10k also based on the color and weight. Since the medal and brooch are connected by the ribbon I first weighed an equal length of ribbon and then subtracted that weight from the total weight of the entire unit i.e. medal, ribbon and brooch. Therefore the actual weight of the medal and brooch is 23.07 grams of 10 k gold or .3090 oz of pure gold content.
Now for the interesting part. The medal was awarded by the Merchants Mutual Casualty Company to Desk Lt. Milton W. Speidel of the Buffalo, N.Y. Police department in 1954 for saving the life of a man in an automobile accident. It is not often that a desk jockey has a chance to earn such a medal and Lt. Speidel did it while on his way home after completing his shift for that day.

Hi

I recently noticed your forum post for the medal given to Milton Speidel. He was my grandfather. During his 30+ years on the buffalo police force, he was one of the founders of the buffalo traffic safety and radar dept. he passed in 1969 st the age of 59. As I was only 5, I've really only heard stories about him saving a man. I would love to know any additional info about where medal came into your hands and, as it has great family sentimental value to my family, if you would be willing to sell it.

Best

David, good to hear from a family member! If you google his name you should be able to find an account of the award and what your grandfather did to earn it. I found the information that way back when I bought the medal from a New York State military medals dealer. I will round up the medal and any paper work I have on it for you. I would not mind selling it to a family member. Regards, Fred

David, There was a newspaper article in the Blasdell, NY, Frontier-Herald, Nov 17, 1954 issue, page 6. I cannot get it on line. If you live in the area you could find it on micro-film at the library or maybe get it on inter-library loan. Regards, Fred
