I have been reading on the HMRC website that you have to pay import VAT on anything over £15 imported into the UK. I am looking to buy some banknotes from the USA and have heard that you don't pay import VAT on banknotes as they are classed as art. Is this true? Any advice greatly received.

For a definitive answer contact your taxing authorities. Ask for a written response.

Hi Badger1979, I've purchased £30-£40 worth of banknotes from a US based ebay seller a few times in the past, with no added import vat.
The items were posted International Priority, in a regular sized envelope, no problems.

Thanks for the help/advice. The seller did say that he has sent notes to the UK loads of times and none of the buyers has so far said they have been charged import tax.
