Please help me out here, I'm interested in buying this coin but I don't want to overspend if this is a problem coin. I can't tell if it's been cleaned as I'm fairly new to classic coin collecting. Please help me out! Thank you. I think it's a PR63 maybe?

Thanks. I thought maybe, based on the price. Can you tell me how you could tell it's cleaned? What are you looking for?

Lots of hairlines on obverse and reverse. Inconsistant color on the bust, especially the head

AU, probably cleaned if it's the dealer I think it is.

Hey everyone. Thanks for your input, it helps me out a lot. If you're interested this is the ebay listing for the coin. I couldn't get a straight answer out of the seller - even though he's sold over 70,000 coins he claims not to know of any cleaning on the coin (yeah right!) https://www.ebay.com/itm/1872-Seate...143106083587There are no more images available unfortunately. Looks like a really nice coin in the image, but obviously the value is not there if it's cleaned.

I don't like the look of it. I would guess that it is a polished AU.

obverse field is washed out due to lighting so its hard to say if anything is going on there. the reverse is another thing. if you blow this up you are going to see hairlines all over the place and not in the same direction. polish lines normally run in the same direction in the same area. there are scratches that look like an X under the left wing. multiple surface scratches above QUAR. DOL. going in different directions. others fields on the reverse are washed out. imo someone is attempting to hide something. even if it is a proof those scratches are not normal. I'm not an expert on proofs but these would concern me
I would pass unless you can return it for a full refund

If I was buying this coin - I'd be in for around $250 and not much over that, from these photos alone. Definitely an impaired proof coin. Good to ask questions here before spending your hard earned money and getting taken. This proof coin look like it was cleaned at one time then dipped (over dipped) then put into an old coin album to speed up some recolor and toning. Not saying that is what this seller is doing, but someone did just that IMO. The coin is valued at just under $500 for a low end proof, being this one has issues and is now impaired, figure almost half off that price due to the issues it now has.

I wouldn't touch it based on these images. There is a reason that this coin is not in TPG plastic.
