One way is to go to the bank and buy a box of pennies for $25.

Then you can look through them and see what you find. I usually find between 5-10 a box.

I also keep all pre-1982 pennies as they are copper. I refill the box with copper pennies and resell them as well.

I usually don't have less them two boxes on hand at any one time.

ImTheCrew - I also do $25 boxes of pennies, and I yield about 4-8 per box, mostly in the 40s and 50s, although I've found a few 20s and 30s and a couple teens as well. I'm trying to put a set of wheaties together from circulation...dunno if I'll ever find the key dates tho. If you don't have the time to roll search, then you can always buy them in bulk from members here, pick out the ones you want, then resell them.

Eagles700LvL - where do you sell the non-wheatie copper pennies and for how much? I've been trying to find a regular buyer, but to no avail thus far.

If you do not want to spend a lot of money then roll hunting is the way to go, but also know that you will not find that many and it can be a long experience. But if you do end up doing this try having one place to get them from and another place to sell them back so you do not end up going through the same coins more than once.

Since you have enough posts then the buy/sell/trade areas in this forum may be a great place to look. Buying from here will give you better quality coins, usually a 100% return policy and being able to buy them cheaper and not paying secondary companies to do it. Badthad seems to always have a list up (like mentioned before) and he ALWAYS has great prices and selections.

Three words: Craigslist, Craigslist, Craigslist

You get to make your own price and how many you are looking for, and there could be some hoards since you're in a rural area. Its worth a try! -PP

I have found them at estate sales and estate auctions .......
Many many many batches them are there all the time.
My largest batch was 1,000 Wheats Cents for $50.00......and they were "truly" unsearched.....whereas you won't get that from any other venue for sure. There was a death in the family at this one, and so they had an auction.....I was the first one there and won the bid and only a handfull of people were even interested in the coins too......which is GREAT !.......scored many many early dates in the 1910's, '20's, '30's. Even a 1909 plain.....
The only one who would have "searched" this batch would have been his wife and they were even in an old crappy metal container.....
I would suggest you try these types of auctions.......they're so good for Wheats, Buffalo's, Mercury, silver qtrs. etc. etc. etc.
Of course sometimes there are some goodies there too. Morgans, Peace, Seated stuff, Capped stuff, Barbers, IHC, etc. etc. etc....
You just never know at these things.....!....Worth it if ya ask me !

Hi from the Dark Side, when I can I buy in bulk and sort and sort and sort. Eventually my collection has built up to include a respectable amount of Indians, whetas and most of the the Memorials. But it is slow work and I am enjoying every minute upgrading and filling in gaps. At the moment I would have about 3000 wheats spare and will develop those into sub-sets of twenty coins to supply the local market. Enjoy the game and try to buy quality coins if you can.
regards
