Before I tackle proofs, I'm practicing my photography of reflective business strike coins. For grading via photo, how are these? Should they be lighter or darker, more or less contrast?

for example, here's the same coin with different lighting, the increased contrast emphasizes the hits, making the coin look worse than it does in hand

since IMO the goal is to show the coin as close as it looks in hand, the earlier pics are better

I much prefer the second set of pics and it looks high AU to me. We all want to choose the pics that make our coins look the best, but for grading purposes, closer than "in-hand" examination is needed and those marks would be seen with a loupe.

Edit: the first pics seem to show the coin reflecting a brown/orange light that makes it look odd.

Agree, but if you want a grade, I'd say 63 tops.

Big hits on face, lots of chatter and not a good strike, I'll give this coin an MS 62, but If the pictures emphasize the marks then perhaps 63.
