Poll Question
This poll was inspired by something KurtS said...

Quote:
I don't collect these dollars, but I'm curious to know how far this presidential series will continue. Through Lincoln perhaps, but there are many less distinguished presidents before that man.

So, what does everyone thing the future holds for the series?

Poll Choices
The series will continue as is, no changes.
The series will continue, but only for collectors.
The dollar bill will be eliminated to encourage their circulation.
The series will be terminated at some point in the future.

My guess is that the coins will continue for collectors. Of course, any change will depend on legislation being passed to modify the original program and reduce mintage requirements.

I also think it will continue only for collectors. But knowing the way the mint is, they will keep issuing them and send them all to Central America for use.

I wondered that since it's not like $1 coins get much use here. Although, family was recently in S.America, where the dollar coins do circulate--go figure, lol.

This series should be "laid to rest" because I think using a 3/4 profile is a bad idea. If the coin is ugly, why expect collector interest? The profiles of these men would have been far more interesting. Just take the RCM as a nearby example, they have done some fine restrikes with past Monarchs: Victoria, Edward, George V, VI, etc.

If they do continue on...let's hope they stop before Warren G. Harding.

I voted for "...but only for collectors" but I would love to see the dollar bill eliminated and the dollar coin and two dollar bill circulate much more.

I agree and I doubt they will ever change it.

I do have some of these, but have yet committed to a Dansco for them. I have a difficult time wanting to do a P&D set since I would not be able to see the MM when it is in an album. If I ended up with just a date set, then I will probably just do it all in proof; at least the cameo makes it look a little less flat.

I think I will wait it out and just keep each president as I get them, making no serious effort. If the series ends, then maybe Dansco will "fix" the album to reflect the change!

I don't see it ending and expect it to continue unchanged until they get through the run displaying all the deceased presidents. It may include Jimmy Carter and George Bush Sr. before all is said and done.

I figure it will become a collectors only thing as well.

After all, the mint is selling them at face value. What is it 250 for $250 and free shipping?

Tells me a lot. They DON'T circulate. Hmmm... neither did the Sacagaweas, Susan B.s or Ikes.

People hoard them because they think they're rare. I see this in the shop on a daily basis. We tell them to spend them.

Dollar coins will not circulate until we get rid of the paper denomination. As a paper collector I'd really hate to see that but it IS the only answer.

I voted for collectors only. I can't see the government to continue to mint that many and only have them sit unwanted in their vaults.

Should be for collectors. A run of all the pres's , on a limited mintage , in proof sets only. Nobody really spends any of the small dollars. I have bunchs in a 5 gal water bottle. Why , I have no idea lol.

I voted "The dollar bill will be eliminated to encourage circulation".....

Since the program is a decade and a half long.....(so far.... may be longer or may be shorter....you never know).... I suspect that their "future plan" IS to eliminate the dollar bill and, by the Billions, these dollar coins will be well in place......and we'll never see another paper $1.00 again.
The coin will last forever and the paper dollar just can't, so, with that at least, they'll save some money.........maybe.

Maybe this is really what I only "suspect".......but, likely, it will just "be for collectors only" though and taken out of circulation.
But it does kind of make sense that, after removing the paper dollar from our pockets, WE'LL THEN HAVE NO CHOICE TO USE THESE PRESIDENTIAL DOLLARS........so, not "encouraged" to use them.....they'll be no choice whether or not to use them !...

Or if we start hoarding now, we can use SBA or Sacagawea dollars! Don't forget about those

I agree, as long as there is a paper dollar that everyone is accustomed to, the dollar coins will continue to go unused.

You make a good point. It is entirely possible that the plan is to have so many of these sitting around that they could easily stop printing the dollar bill; there would be no worry about the remaining dollar bills being being hoarded or destroyed since a replacement (the baby dollar) exists in large amounts, ready to fill the void.

The end date isn't precisely known yet. Currently they have planned to go up to Ford, but I read somewhere that they will only mint coins with presidents that have been dead for 4 years (I think). So that would mean Regan would be the last in 2016, unless George H.W. Bush kicks the bucket before 2012.

Given what I seen lately, I think the mint will continue with the series as is.

Wonder if sorted out how they will know that a former president has not died.
