Earlier today I found this coin in the bottom of a box and I'm hoping to properly identify it.

Is this a gold coin, or is it plated?

The case that it's in is 2cm across and 7mm thick. Regarding the case, I have never seen anything like this.

I would say the coin is genuine, but that makes no difference; the coin itself is in rather poor condition anyway.
Jewelry value only.

Unless someone has done an enormous amount of alteration, it is a shilling that has been gold-plated. The Shield back Sovereign of 1887 does not have the Garter around the shield.
I have seen that sort of mount many times before over here, so maybe a British designer or jeweller.
I agree, jewellery value only now. 1887 shillings are very common anyway, so not worth breaking out. You can pick up an XF specimen for under $10 I think.

Looks like a genuine enamelled coin. They are quite collectable as such.

Coaster, thanks for those links. Obviously enameling coins in the late 1800's was a thing over there. Here in the US, that wasn't really done. I've seen one or two, but I'd say they're extremely rare. Back from that time the love token was much, much, more prevalent.

I have a fair amount of enameled coins already. I've just never seen the encasement, and I wanted to confirm that there wasn't an 1887 gold shilling.
