I've just completed checking my final bag of £2 coins, making a total of 1,000 that I've sorted through since the middle of last year. It's too small a sample to draw too many conclusions, but it may interest other people who would like to know what's around!

'Definitive' coins
1997 - 21
1998 - 137
1999 - 62
2000 - 55

2013 London Underground Roundel - 0
2014 Trinity House - 8
2014 World War I - 2
2015 World War I - 4
2015 Magna Carta - 2
2016 Great Fire of London - 1
2016 World War I - 7
2016 Shakespeare History - 9
2016 Shakespeare Comedy - 0
2016 Shakespeare Tragedy - 3

Forgeries - 3 (dated 2011, 2013 and 2015)

I found no post-2016 coins at all, and quite a few commemoratives did not show up either.

Very interesting and thanks for posting. I sell quite a few of these at market and recently acquired a large accumulation from a hoarder, so I have become quite familiar with them all.
Comments:
2002 Commonwealth games - all are scarce as you found, Northern Ireland more so than the others.
2008 Olympics - there are two - Beijing handover and Centenary of London games, both a bit scarcer than average.
2015 Britannia - a tip for a future rarity.
2016 Great Fire and Shakespeare Comedy also proving much scarcer.
2017+ - None issued for circulation and the RM has confirmed the Jane Austen and WW1/RAF will NOT be circulated at all now. They report demand for the £2 coin as currency is weak and so they do not plan to provide many more. (That doesn't stop them selling in packets at vastly inflated prices of course!)

NumisRob - thanks for that hard work.

PaddyB - re the RM's plans for the £2, is that no coins just for now until current stocks drop, or a general scaling back of supply for the long term? What is the source of that info?

I would be interested to learn how the annual demand for specific denominations is calculated.

I was under the impression that once a particular demand is calculated, it is first made up from however many commemoratives they decide to release. Then any shortfall is made up by producing definitives. Is this not the case?

The news about the 2017 £2s not being released was discussed on another forum - I think predecimal.com but I have not been able to locate it yet. It referred to just the 2017 coins, but as yet no 2018 coins have appeared in circulation, so it may be a longer term issue. I don't think anyone has made a policy to never release them again, but not until there is demand for more.

(I know that most shops seem to prefer to give out the new £1 coins in change than the £2s, so that may be the root cause.)

I believe demand is based on requests from the high street banks.

As to how the RM decide on how many of each pattern to produce - it is anybody's guess! Cynically I suspect they are more interested in playing with the availability to keep demand for their expensive packet coins at a maximum.

We will continue to see less and less mintages of coins. There is an agenda to push the society to be totally cashless. It will not happen in my lifetime but my grandsons future will be totally without any form of money ever changing hands. Everything will be automated with a swipe feature . So could that mean collections will be even more valuable? I for one hope so
