I found this the other day...never seen one in real life but I think it has all the markings of a split planchet. It's not a " Magician's coin gone bad" is it?

I think it's neat how you can see the Monticello and the outline of Jefferson's head on the reverse.

Any comments/insights?

Yes, lamination, but...when the lamination covers the entire side of the coin, you have a different and more valuable coin.

This coin is a delamination, more specifically, a split planchet, split after the strike. No idea of value, I don't follow the error market...but it is better that you have the date than the other guy who ended up with the reverse.

Thanks, Chuck. Ya I guess I did get the better half! It would have been nice to have the other side...

It is a nice "split planchet". maybe Mike D. will be able to indicate a value on these. It's been awhile since I've priced one.

As others have indicated, the coin split after the strike. Value would be somewhere between $20 and $30.
