Just read on ebay Canada's latest update that they will begin collecting taxes on behalf of the seller and automatically remitting them to the government in certain States and provinces. This could start as soon as the end of March. Will 999 gold and silver be exempt? They did not exempt them from taxes and duties with their global shipping program.

Is that also the case in the US?

Yes. Certain States passed laws in mid-2018 which will force ebay to collect and remit taxes on the State's behalf. I'm not entirely sure which States (if any) are exempt from this law.

ebay has a rollout schedule for each State and province. I'm not sure if bullion items will be exempted or not. If you live in a high tax State or province though, you will be at a competitive disadvantage when trying to sell your NCLT.

Give us a link please JGG. I've seen nothing mentioned of ebay collecting Canadian taxes, only US state taxes on items sold by Canadian sellers shipped to the US.

Uh is that the the non existent duties on coins that apply to Canadian coins that the Global Shipping program purport to collect ? (it is as far as I can establish a broker processing fee for entries....coins are duty free GST may be applicable but is only collected above a threshold amount and the Federal gov't is generally not willing to collect sales taxes for provinces who have not joined the Harmonized Sales Tax) )

https://pages.ebay.com/seller-cente...y/index.htmlhttps://community.ebay.com/t5/Annou...a-p/29124500I know the people looking on this thread are mostly Canadian, but this is what I received as far as state sales tax for the U.S. From my understanding, the sales tax doesn't apply to where you (the seller) lives, but instead where the buyer lives, so it seems like if you live in a high tax state it will be more of a bummer because your state sales tax will be applied to your purchases. I may be wrong on the understanding bit but that is what I got from it. Can't say if it is 100% the same for our neighbors to the north though.

Going to be quite expensive for mom and pop coin shops to track and collect SALTs. What about foreign buyers with US addresses? How could you possible remit all these taxes to 50 separate States and however many provinces and territories? Is the shipping service taxable to your State or the buyers State? What about State's where bullion is tax exempt. Right now ebay is collecting and remitting, but what about people with online stores? Will people set up PO Boxes in neighboring low tax or no tax States to avoid paying SALTs? Can another State across the Country audit me for SALT discrepancies (my remittance vs customer remittance)? Profits (if any) are extremely thin in this business and I'm not sure it is worth it to continue selling in this type of environment.
