Hi,
I don't know anything about collecting or buying coins, but I need some information about where to buy a 2008 Olympics coin set.
Where is a good place to get it?
***Edited to remove links by a new member***
Sorry to ask such a basic question.

Sara, Sorry I cannot help you much on these types of coins. Most of my collecting has to do with government issues ( I have been known to blunder once in awhile). I guess you would have to classify these as tokens as they are not expected to be circulated. Do you expect them to grow in value? Are you buying for investment or just because you like the design?

All the 2008 Olympic coins are from China - they have a bunch of stuff; silver coins, gold coins, gold plated commemorative coins, even regular coins for circulation (which people stood in line at banks for many many hours, since there was a very limited number minted). Anyways, unless you know someone in China who could send you some, your best bet would be ebay... I've actually got one of the gold plated commems...but sorry, I'm not selling it

Thanks for the welcome and the advice. I see the ones on ebay are much less than online stores. Do you think it makes sense to buy a bunch and then sell them later - when the Chinese sellers run out? Just a thought... BTW, sorry for posting links. Didn't know it wasn't allowed.

Wait until the Chinese counterfeits hit ebay. They'll be 2008 Olympic coins from China, right? and cheaper!

Parklane, hehe...I wish it weren't so true. Btw, on another collector note, has anyone realized there's an "Official Gemstone for the 2008 Olympics"? It's a red stone called Andesine that's supposedly from Tibet, but the independent labs are saying that it's been treated to look red, and possibly n ot from Asia at all. I strongly warn anyone against buying it for their GF, wifey, etc. Money down the toilet.

Go to the liberry and read a copy of the RedBook. Then work on the rest of their inventory.

Ask questions, put up pictures of coins you're wondering about, get some information from books and read everything you can ( RedBook would be great for some things) And really, as Jbuck has said, right here on CCF is a very friendly place to pick up a LOT of knowledge from very wise people who are into this hobby. Your "Library" in Isreal may not have much on coins....hard to say......but anything you need can be easily purchased online as well.

oops, missed the Israel part. They might have a book like the Standard Catalog of World coins, tho. You might ask if someone has an outdated edition they'll mail you. You don't need it for prices.

[ red]WELCOME TO THE FORUM[/red]Now I just wonder if the those Olympic coins are all made in China, are they be made by the usual counterfeiters that make our coins? Would they fake their own coins? Would it be safe to buy their coins since they may well be made of Lead? If the Chinese make our coins as fakes, shouldn't we contact our gangsters to have them counterfeit the Olympic coins and send them to China? Also, just kidding. Maybe not with the sending fakes to China though. Actually can't help you since I just don't collect or want commemoratives anymore. Used to collect them and then just gave them all away.
