I know that you can only buy gold or silver bullion from a dealer for a mark up over spot price. The question I have is about the minted coins that are sold at the US Mint. Can a dealer purchase these coins or for that matter any coins at a discount under the price offered at the mint web site to the general public?

No, the mint does not discount anything that I know of to a dealer. The only thing they get a break on is Unc Silver Eagles, they pay a certain amount over spot silver for those I believe. The advantage they have I think is that shipping is only 4.95 no matter what the order (I could be wrong on this) Which means they can mark up the price 5 bucks and be selling at basically what the mint sells them for with shipping. So, you order one Proof set and pay about 32 dollars with shipping- or go to the dealer and pay about that and get to maybe pick out your set. I prefer to give my dealer the extra cash personally.
Rest in Peace

There have been times when the mint offered quantity prices on proof sets, but I don't think they've done that for about ten years now. Unless the rules have changed, no conventional coin dealer has sufficient net worth to buy gold eagles direct.

I know the Mint does not give discounts to any one for anything but I don't see why not. You would think that they would appreciate very large orders so they could work lots and lots of OT. The larger the order, the bigger the discount. It's not like they have anything to loose you know. Guess who pays for all their stuff, wages, life insurance, health insurance, vacations and even the pens and pencils they steal from work? If they did give discounts and they ran out of money, they could do as the government always does, raise taxes.
