Have had my Note 8 for over a year, and on a whim, just snapped a couple of quick point and shoot pics. Hope the detail shows up as well, after they are reduced to post here. I was surprised at how well they came out. The coin is ugly, but the photos are decent. Might be using my android more often now for ebay pics. Clic on pic for better view.

When I joined CCF, my phone photos were terrible. Then I found out that my phone literally could not focus, it didn't have the hardware. So I tried out a few and finally found a phone that takes great pics, IMO. It is good enough for me and is all I use now.

Remarkable pics of a troubled coin. Impressive.

That's actually pretty good. I presume it has a macro mode.

Thanks. I just held the phone 6-8 inches away and took the picture, then cropped and reduced to post. Not sure of any of the settings, but will probably investigate, a macro mode would be great. Actually, my wife said to me, "what setting did you have it on?"

Also have a Samsung Note 8 and have just started taking pics of coins. Agree these photos are great. However, my coins are mostly Morgan $ and don't seem to photograph as nicely with my Note 8. I seem to have trouble showing the luster on the coin ( Morgan dollar) correctly unless I angle the camera slightly and then the overall pic seems just a little distorted. Question: Does a holder/stand for a cell phone help with taking a picture of a coin?

The photos are surprisingly sharp. I would never be able to hold the phone that steady. Did you use some type of stand to steady the phone?

I am not the OP, but I will answer. As I said in an above reply, my old phone literally could not focus properly. In early 2019 I tried a few phones and phone one that takes good close up shots in focus. But yes, just the minimal shake from an even steady hand makes a lot of difference- and my hands are not steady, so....

I put my camera on top of a small box (like a music box with a flat top) and then hang the phone over the edge so that it is balanced. I then am able to just lightly tap the phone to take a clear pic. I believe if I set a couple second timer so that the pic is after my click it would be even smoother.

Hope this helps!

I have seen the following used to steady a cell phone for coin photography.
