I was lucky enough to acquire one of these. It's P/L with frosted and mirrored features. Pictures didn't come out so good though. Anyone know the #'s for how many are thought to exist? Thanks.

Hi Spica, I know the mintages for the regular and edge variety versions listed in Krause. I was wondering if anyone knows the mintage for specimens of this year?

Hi Numismat,
Just being nosey. Could you explain again what you're wanting to know? I thought spica answered your question.
Thanks

Hmm, the "partly frosted, partly mirror" appearance is normal for those 5 fr coins. See the mint's website for an image of a recent piece: http://www.swissmint.ch/upload/bild...n/fr_5_b.jpghttp://www.swissmint.ch/upload/bild...n/fr_5_w.jpgNewer Swiss coins (commems only, I think) are sometimes struck as "essai" pieces. They would then have an extra logo - a cross in a circle, with an E on the edge. Those have low mintages and higher prices. But I am pretty sure they did not do that back in the 1930s ... Christian

Very nice coin! I agree with Christian, Switzerland has the distinction of issuing very nice strikes for circulation. I often found nearly "cameo" coins in change while there--not from the 30s of course--I never saw any silver.

Kurt, you said it... "not from the 30's". Copper-nickel, post 1968 dates are often P/L. 1931, however... there are no proof or P/L examples. Only specimens. And I was wondering if anyone knows the mintage numbers for just the specimens. Here are much better pictures, this time without using the flash.

Numismat, I could easily be wrong to interpret older coins by my limited experience. That is indeed a beautiful 5 Fr! I can't recall seeing any circulating "cameos" with such well-struck facial features. Good luck finding more info...are there any collectors here living in CH? I haven't met one yet.

Thanks!Yea, I think there would be a lot more international collectors adding their 2 cents if the forum had some sort of translation service built in. Until then... =)

Don't think it is primarily a language/translation issue. If I did not collect modern US coins in addition to the euro coins that circulate here (I'm in NW, DE), I would probably not visit places where "my" coins are in a "World" mixed bag. (No criticism of this community; that applies, due to the collecting habits of most Americans, to pretty much all US based forums.) You do, however, have a very nice coin there! Christian
