Memories of my dad searching through pocket change to fill his albums has rekindled my interest in collecting. My son and I have recently started searching for error coins. We haven't singled out one specific type of coin as a favorite yet, but we do like searching pennies, nickels, and quarters so far. I was so excited to find a place where I could turn to get help from those who are so knowledgeable.:) My son and I are learning, so we aren't real sure if we have found something worth keeping. I found this penny in with some that I had in a jar from 1992 and need help figuring out what I have. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

to the CCF!

This is a phenomenal place to share and learn! Your coin is showing plating bubbles, which is basically trapped gas under the surface of the coin. This is extremely common on coins after 1982, because of the switch from copper to zinc pennies. The plating didn't completely adhere with the zinc planchets, and so pockets of air expanded below the coins surface. Eventually these may turn into zinc rot, and leave the coin damaged. It's very common and adds no extra value. It's safe to spend. Hope this helped! Best of luck to you and your son. Happy hunting!

Thank you for the help! I kinda thought that might be what that was since it was a 1986 coin.

The 1980's seem to have lots of plating issues. I think they were still trying to perfect the switch to zinc. Happy to help!
