Hello,

I have an 1884 New Orleans mint Morgan. It and an 1878 8 Tail Feather Morgan seem to have "different lips" than others that I have. With most Morgans that I have, the lips appear to be closed. with both the 1884 and 1878 Philadelphia, the lips are separated, and you can see the field (correct word?) behind them. Is this common for this coin? For my sob story, I have been collecting coins for many years, but have been selling them off over the past few years to pay bills. I know I have lost a lot of money by selling for less than what I paid for them. I am trying to sell some coins now - these being among them, and that is how I spotted the lip situation. I'd like to not lose money on these, so, can anyone tell me if this (and maybe the 1878) is anything special?

It is most likely the result of the die being polished to remove the clash marks. You can see the loss of hair detail near the designer's initial as well. Over-polishing the dies in 1878 happened quite often as the mint frantically tried to keep up with production through up to the B2 reverse

Thanks, Jbuck and Dave.

Dave, I actually think the coins look better with the lips not touching. I was hoping someone would tell me it's worth 60 million dollars, but, thanks for the answer!

The majority of what I "had" are gone as to Morgans and Peace dollars. If it is okay to post my ebay listing that includes the two Morgans above, I will paste it here.

I think you need to be a member for 21 days and have a 100 post count to link personal auctions on external auction sites ( ebay included)

Thanks for the info, Dave!

Here is the 1878 8 TF that is part of the listing. I have 5 Morgans in a holder up for bid; the other coins are simply an 1890 S, a 1900 P, and a 1921 P; so, first year of mintage, last year of mintage, and turn of the century included.

I'll be putting other coins up, too. I just sold an XF 1866 Two Cent Piece. I have old Roman coins (maybe 10ish) I will probably list, too. I have no idea as to their value.

Thanks, Grape and Birdman; I bought it as a BU off ebay. I realized when I bought it that the grading wasn't official, and that I was taking a chance. I threw the original holder out, but I remember some VAM designation written on it too.

The lips, though, again, I have only spotted a few others online like them.
