I would occasionally get them at the post office or the credit union. However, my local PO recently installed a new machine that only uses debit/credit cards (cash users have to wait in line). Because of online banking and ACH, my trips to the CU are now few and far between.

I try to circulate what I consider the "obscure" denominations as much as I can. Its a way for a me to make spending money a little less monotonous.

The 50 cent piece, dollar coins, two dollar bills, and to a lesser extent 50 dollar bills.

So yeah, I spend the dollar coins when I buy small purchases. Like a soda, or a McDonalds dollar menu lunch.

So

I spend them all the time. I'll ask for them at the bank add what I don't have to my collection and spend the rest.

That's good to find people using them, I was traveling on the 87 highway the other day and used them at the toll booths.

To this day I have NEVER got one in circulation. If I did I'd spend them all day.

We sell them at the coin shop. If we get low on $1 notes we give them (as wall as Sacagaweas, Susan Bs and Ikes) as change.

Sorry to say it but it's another doomed dollar coin. People hoard them. We may spend them but those that are not "real collectors" hoard them.
I see it everyday from Ikes on up I'm afraid.

I go to the bank and get a few. I add to my collection and spend the rest. I do really enjoy spending them, but cashiers hate getting them. In fact, one time a cashier picked up those that I placed on the counter, looked at them for a moment, and then literally threw them on the counter so that that they bounced back towards me. As she did this she said "I don't want any of this *^#@&^ counterfeit money!" But in another instance I was shopping in an international market in a large city and a salesman actually gave me dollar coins as change. I then asked him why he did this and he responded "I prefer dollar coins. They remind me of back home where larger denominations are coins rather than bills."

A family member just returned from Peru/Ecuador where they are actually used by the locals--maybe from tourists?
I seldom ever get one to spend.

............Bonaparte !

I just put two John Q. Adams into circulation a couple days ago !
(problem is, those were the two I needed for my albums !....now I gotta go get two more from the bank !)
I think in total for the duration of the program thus far, I've put a dozen into ciculation....
But, once the paper dollar is done away with in 5 years or so, we'll ALL be using these dollar coins......they're already out there by the Billions sitting in banks....so.....I don't view it as our duty to "get em' circulated" at all.......there will be no choice soon.

When they are first made available, I buy two or three rolls. I keep one, and then enjoy spending the others.

I tried several banks last Friday, and was unable to find any which had the new Jacksons.

I ask for $50.00 worth from my credit union most every week. I search through the rolls pick a couple of "keepers" and spend the rest.

Responses to the use are somewhat amusing.
- I save these. from a local gas station clerk I frequent.
- What are these? from a lot of people not as many as when they 1st came out though.
- I really appreciate the coins you left me! from tipping. (Not sure it is the dollar coin or the amount of tip there thanking me for?)
- Is this real?
the list goes on....
- I hate these things I can't give them away!from a clerk who can't pass them off in handing out change.
