Was sorting through my collection of loose V nickels to be 2x2ed and noticed this oddly looking 1893 V nickel that sure as heck seems to me still has 'that frosty cartwheel effect' normally seen on coins XF or better. I looked under my pocket microscope to make sure it wasn't just luster like scratches and they look like traces of that 'frost' or what I call mint luster in between the stars and along the edges. The strongest areas are from Liberty's nose to around the date, and a tiny bit near the upper rear of Liberty's head. When held in hand it has traces of a cartwheel effect to it. How is such possible on a coin in AG/FR2? I've never seen any traces of luster on any coin below VF/XF. Need any close ups just ask.

Probably an old cleaning, or a stronger patina.

Maybe. Probably could've been one of those ones that were a nice strong strike and have strong luster. Seen that in some 80's nickels. Makes me wonder how nice this coin was if it ways say 1900. That's why coins are so interesting. You can have an entire roll of worn V nickels of the same date, or uncirculated ones, and none of them are exactly alike.

Not my area of collecting anymore, but I agree with your statement and cannot imagine how there could be any remaining mint luster on an AG-graded coin.

Might be from some sort of cleaning attempt.

Unlikely.
It looks abrasively cleaned to me.

Given what appears to be many parallel scratch lines, abrasive "cleaning" will generate artificial luster .... my guess.
Rest in Peace
