Just received an 1894 Barber dime from ebay that I picked up for 6 bucks including shipping. Condition is AG, extremely light scratch is present that I was disappointed about. However, I'm thinking a possible 1894-O, but the mintmark area is worn smooth. There looks to be a very faint outline of one, but I could be tricking myself. So, any tips on this? Unfortunately, it's not gonna be an 1894-S : (

It probably won't show well in the pictures, BUT, I will do my best to take good ones.

The photo is something like 14X. I could see it with my unaided eyes.

A bit above the arrow, it's definitely faint, as I would imagine would be normal with the coin worn all the way to AG.

I think I see something, not sure. It could just be JPEG artifacts; or it could be your Jedi powers of persuasion! I need to view it on the big monitor at work.

If this is an 1894-O, I'm going to be very pleased. The sellermight have missed the light scratch because it only shows up under bright light when tilted if he made a mistake, but that could have caused him to miss this too.

I'd have to see the coin in hand... from the pic I'm about 50/50 on it being an O. BTW great dime... I completed my Barber dime set about 6 months ago... Many look a lot like that one. But it was by far my most favorite set to put together ever.

I do see something after viewing it again at work, but I am getting that "Face on Mars" feeling. I hope an expert on the series will weigh in, especially with regards to the mint mark location(s) for that specific date.

Definitely not AG3, more like FR2 when compared to certified examples. I do not think anyone will be able to tell one way or the other without the coin in hand.

Really? Seems like an AG compared to the stuff I've seen. Maybe a lower one, though.

Heritage has two AG3 examples in their archives both certified by ANACS and they each have 75+% of rims visible and the area of the mintmark is also completely visible, yours has 0% of rims left and the mintmark area is smooth. However, the Heritage price guide has a listing of $20-27 for FR2 so if it does have a mintmark, it is still worth more than your average slick Barber.

Hmm yeah, I see that. I still am not sure if that would run it all the way to FR-2 because most of the coins with that grade I've seen look to be in really bad shape with much of the design missing. Either way, hopefully $6 was still a good deal.
