At my LCS the other day, a customer came in with an Irish 10p dated 1976 in about vf condition, along with an ebay "buy it now" reference for a graded SP63 of the same year (PCCGS I think), asking price over $1000. it was allegedly a rare issue struck at the Birmingham mint.

He was looking to sell the 1976 10p for quite a bit, it seems. Obviously, my LCS declined to buy.

My questions to you:

1. Are there any specimen issues of this date and denomination? I can find no reference that there is such a thing.

2. Where are Republic of Ireland coins minted?

My copy of
Coin Yearbook 2011
Independent Price Guide and Collectors Handbook.

does not indicate anything particularly scarce or valuable about the the
Irish 10 P, dated 1976.

As far as I know all Irish decimal coins were struck at The Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Wales until the mid-1970s and thereafter at the new Irish Mint in Sandyford, County Dublin. However during the mid-seventies the Kings Norton Metal Company / Birmingham Mint did indeed strike some pattern Irish coins:

I wouldn't know how to identify these from standard coins, but any stray VF 1976 Irish 10p is certain to be a normal circulation coin, which had a mintage of 9,433,000 - quite high for Ireland.

@numisrob, thanks. So there indeed were a few coins struck in Birmingham. PCGS does have a few Irish 10p 1976 given SP63-67 grades listed on their website, si it must be those, but of course there is no indication how to tell those from the regular ones.

Of course it is a bit academic, given that any "specimen" coin worn to the VF level would have minimal value now.

@numisrob, I looked at that reference you supplied me, and it appears that they would be told apart by the nature of the strike, not the design-a specimen strike vs. a circulation strike. I could probably find a description of how the two differ in appearance if I was so inclined.
