Going through a bunch of "Stuff" today- I found this 1971P Kennedy that I've had from 1971.

What finish is on this thing- Silver plated, chromed or ?

Its got shine- I'll give it that!

It could be polished, tumbled, or plated. Any way you look at it, it's worth 50 cents.

It has likely been plated. I can't tell you if it was chrome or not, It isn't silver.

The other possibility that would make it look this way and it has been suggested by coppercoins is that it was buffed up. Yopu can use some paste type polishes and a polishing wheel to get this effect.

Take a look at the edge, if the reeding still looks reasonably OK, it was probably buffed. If the reeding looks like the surface of the coin and appears filled, it has been "chromed". (again, not necessarily chrome)

Thanks,
Bill

PS: Looking at the last few pics more closely, the reeding seems OK, and I see fine lines all moving in the same direction. It was polished, on a wheel, could be automotive polishing compound:-)

Hi Bill:

I re-examined the reeding, its normal- not filled, spaced etc just like a regular coin

Agree- Someone really polished/buffed the h*** out of this coin.

Beautiful shine for .50Cents! (LOL)

I used to do all kinds of weird things to coins to see if I could duplicate their "Out of Mint" experiences:-)

I figured that once the edge was OK, that the coin was polished. I've done the heavy polishing compound thing to many coins in my time:-)
