Poll Question
PCGS is considering the 5 ozt Apollo commemorative coin to be a dollar coin and is including it in their Modern Commemorative Dollars, Proof registry set and Coin Facts listing (CoinFacts Home, Commemoratives Modern Silver and Clad Commemoratives, $1 (Silver), 2019-P $1 Apollo 11 50th Anniversary 5 oz Silver, DC).

NGC is also considering the 5 ozt Apollo commemorative coin to be a dollar coin and is including it in their Modern Commemorative Silver Dollars, 1983-Date, Proof registry set. NGC does not sub-divide its Coin Explorer Modern Commemoratives (1982-Date) category.

The US Mint indicates separate categories for the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Silver Dollar Coin and the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Five Ounce Proof Silver Coin.

The authorizing PL 114-282 authorizes $1 Silver Coins (the normal size coin) and Proof Silver $1 Coins (the 5 ozt coin).

What do you think? How should the 5 ozt Apollo commemorative be classified?

Question: Is the 2019 5 ozt Apollo commemorative coin a modern commemorative silver dollar?

Poll Choices
Yes. It's a $1 coin and belongs with the other commemorative silver dollars.
No. It's not really a $1 coin and should be in its own category.
 I think it's something else. I'll leave a comment.
 No opinion whatsoever on this.

The question of whether or not it's a dollar coin and whether or not it should be in a registry set are two separate questions to me. It says it's a dollar coin (would have been better if the legislation make it a $10 or something different) so it is in fact a dollar coin. As far as the registry I could be convinced either way. Technically speaking it should be included for a full set of dollar coins, but at the same time it is a 5 oz one so one of these things is clearly not like the others. Most people probably won't have a problem with it included since so far it's just one, but if they keep doing 5 oz ones in the future I could see those getting split off into their own set

Thanks everyone who voted in the poll

Looks like about 2/3 would classify the 5 ozt Apollo commemorative coin as a modern commemorative silver dollar and about 1/3 wouldn't.

Personally, I was in the wouldn't camp.

To me this coin is a similar case as the 2016 Centennial Gold Coins. I wouldn't classify those coins with Mercury dimes, Standing Liberty quarters or Walking Liberty half dollars (and neither does the Red Book or any other guide that I'm aware of).

The 2019 Red Book does have those gold coins listed in their respective denominations, but by date rather than type. Personally, I'd have listed them in the gold bullion category (and yeah, I'm in the minority on this poll as well).
