I'm 68 and normally I collect Morgan dollars, but lately I've decided to complete my Lincoln Cent folder from my boyhood (It only goes as far as 1962, so there's 57 years I don't have to worry about.) Anyway, I'm looking at inexpensive (around $10 or less where possible) coins and I've run across a few coins I liked that exhibit small spots of turquoise color (patina I assume). Is this of concern to Lincoln collectors? Does it lessen the value? I've avoided them thus far, but if that's not perceived as a problem I might have bought a few.
Rest in Peace

Are you talking about Mint State Lincolns . They if left in a folder for an extended period can turn turquoise and other colors . Other then that I'm not sure what you mean unless it's green color your talking about which is Verdigris or corrosion .

I think it would be difficult to answer this question except on a case-by-case basis with pics.

Personally, I'd steer clear of them. Judging from your description I'm picturing the open holed variety of folder where the contamination would cross over to those you already have or add in the future. As for keeping the cost under $10, that's very doable. I see a very nice complete set in your future.

I agree if the coins you were considering had turquoise then you were wise to pass on them. That's corrosion and can only get worse with time

My suggestion is to spend a little and change to an Album. Much safer for those coins.

"Just Carl," what's the difference between a folder and an album? Better quality non-reactive material? The whole point, for me, is to complete my folder from my youth. I'm trying to keep my per coin cost low so I don't agonize over lost value (though I'm thinking hard about obtaining slabbed mint state examples of the 31-S, 31-D and 09-S VDB.

Even without seeing pictures, it sounds like you have early stage verdigris (corrosion). It is not considered part of a "patina", it's just plain corrosion which damages the coin. Typically, it's caused by improper storage.

Albums let you see both sides of each coin, which are held in with clear plastic slides.

Folders show only one side of each coin and they are held in by friction (between coin and hole's edge).
