Do you grade the coin or the countermark?

I'd give it a split grade G/AG for the host coin, the a VF for the countermark (opinions welcome). So when I price it, which grade do I look at?

Hmm yeah I would sort of be a bit torn between the two grades. Very interesting cointerstamp. I'd say that based on grade and the presence of the stamp (which I consider to be a positive feature) that it could be graded as a Good.

Why not split the difference and call it a net grade of VG

I always grade counterstamped coins by the detail on the original coin, not the counterstamp. In this case I'd call it AG.
