I recently started assembling a Franklin half dollar set and was wondering if a complete set is worth significantly more then the sum values of the individual coins or not? Would I be likely to find some of these in circulation?

Hi Welcome to the forum .

the Franklin half dollars has as a core a couple of rarities that make the series what it is 49-D and 50-D ,, while a complete set in high grade will demand a significant premium a large percentage of the appeal will be in the conditional rarities since most of the coins in the set are readily available and there is no shortage of really any of the dates or mints in average mint state condition .

by conditional rarities I means not just coins which exhibit FBL's in the series but coins which seldom exhibit that characteristic even into the Gem grades .

Like the 53-S

This coin alone full bell lines in MS 65 would sell for multiples of the full set price of coins MS-64 and 65 even with a few of the other dates which also display the full bell lines but are much more commonly well struck .

Well, all of the coins I currently have are circulated, I would judge in the range of F12 to maybe 40 for a couple of the really good ones. I already have the 50-D (maybe VF20). In that condition, will a complete set have any real value above the silver value?

The silver value of the halves will vary with the market (spot) price of silver .

Numismatically coins in the grades that you mention will carry slightly above bullion value but not a great deal .

These sets in that grade range can be bought for around 225.00 to 250.00 right now and I have seen them well below that level with the fluctuating silver values .

having said all that Franklins are in my opinion a sleeper series which is why my mind went to mint state examples , they can be bought for reasonable money right now but I tend to think that the series is due for an adjustment and that adjustment will be up not based on the silver content alone but also on the numismatic demand on the coins .
