Hello Gluggo! Welcome to coin photography!

Let me say something about alternative way.
Need to obtain industrial USB camera with at least 8MP sensor and also industrial lens with about 0.5-1X magnification, not the cheapy consumer USB-scope. Overall cost will be about $250 with good condition second hand lens and mount, then you can solve such tasks pretty fast and easy.
Cons that you can't use this camera outside home.
Pros that you can achieve about 5X more real optical magnification without expensive tools for stacking.

JW...can you give a "shopping list" for folks who want to try this? Preferably on ebay or Amazon or other accessible shopping site?

Such cameras is widely available on ali-express, but for the optics it is hard to find cheap one on regular store. I bought mine on japan yahoo auction.

Most of the "8MP" or whatever USB scopes actually have much fewer pixels, and create an "8MP" image through digital upconversion.

also, it's important that the camera have good control software. What control software are you using for the images you showed?

Most of the "8MP" or whatever USB scopes

Don't know about most of them. All mine was with exactly same amount of MP as promissed.
The soft is some kind of S-eye. But for true science work need professional software.

Hi Justwalking thank you for that. I guess I did not mention I do own 3 microscopes. 1 of which was quite expensive and large. I ended up getting the smaller version of the mocroscope. The last one is one of the $20.00 USB types. Why did I buy these just a phase I guess but I do prefer my new set up. I found me some old Vivitar bellows kits on ebay that I purchased for parts. Got some other parts coming from oversea's. Just love to spend my money I guess dummy me. Here is a few pics of them. Ist one was a AmScope 3.5X-90X Trinocular Microscope. 2nd was the smaller AmScope M170C-E 40X-1000X. I did not have a handy photo in my laptop so its a stock photo.
I sort of put them away for now to be used at a later time. The big microscope was a over kill I know now. But I really prefer the new set up it even lets me capture a full slab. As you can see with this other picture. So I can go from full slab right down to a dime size coin or zoom in with the Bellows for high microscopic pics but I really not into that. Just a amateur.

Yes, the real microscope is not practical for full slab. But did not understand why your great AmScope 3.5X-90X is wrong for that?
As I can see the specs the field of view can cover 65mm in diameter. Probably you need to attach 0.3X barlow to see whole slab.

Thank you Justwalking I just might try that I even think I already have a 3x Extra lens. Sort of packed everything in a box and put it all under one of my storage tables in the Living Room. I am sure the cat sneaks around during the day wondering what all those cool thing are while I am at work.

Last couple days I've read a bunch of bad stuff about Keyence lenses. Seems they are not very sharp. JW are you sure these lenses have good sharpness and can produce images like you are showing?
