technically ,it is supposed to be for internal purposes. The design is a trial and error concept. For that note they may have used a lot of prototypes.

Very impressive. Is this your note? Do you have an image of the back?

These prototype notes are cool, gives insight on the thinking of the BOC design teams, chased down 1963 and 1964 version of the 20 dollar proof and essay at recent FUN auction.

Nice note.
But how does one know for sure this is a prototype note? I have not heard or read about this anywhere.
Is this something that is coming from the printing company that may have tried for their own proofs or is this something that was commissioned by Bank of Canada and later sold by them?
There is so much about it that does not seem correct.
First of all the title from the grading company does not say anything about it being face proof prototype. This is just a sticker.
Secondly the title says BC-50aS. Is this a GPMC numbering? In that case there is really no such number in the catalog. Unless of course I am missing something.
I mean how do you differentiate between a fake and a real thing. I would love to see some write up on this.

It is sure, this is a true note ,if it is done by the printing company ,it is surely done for the bank of canada . they are not making that only for the fun of it. there is no publiscation on those proofs because there are not often in public hand they are kept a the bank of canada or at the printing company.

For those who knows me I have shared a few of this type of notes at shows and meetings and actually have a really cool part set of actual issued notes for obvious reasons just can't post. These type of trial or experimental notes are what any printing company would expect to do before selecting final design for any product currency included. Some of these notes were bundled by mistake when the BOC had their two big archives sale in around 2000 and others like one of my notes was kept by the engraver with the bank note company blessing apparently and recently the 1963, 64 essay and proof was in this years FUN auction. PCGS would have done their research on this note before putting their reputation on it and it's really costly for these types of notes to be slabbed

Paisa, the numbering that PCGS used is not right, To be a specimen note is supposed to have no serial number or 0000000 ,it is supposed to have front and back on the same note, with or without signatures. BUT in all cases you need to have all the other characteristics of a real note. It is not the first time that PCGS create funny reference number. Good observation Paisa, I mist that one.

Quote: PCGS would have done their research on this note before putting their reputation on it and it's really costly for these types of notes to be slabbed I don't think anyone is questioning whether PCGS has done their research or not. I think like in any collecting it is only when this information is made public and shared and verified that the collectable has any real value IMHO. When neither the BoC nor the GPMC is making any referene to this thing and yet PCGS is using a reference based on the GPMC numbering system should in itself be a red flag to any collector. At the very least they should either question PCGS or they should question GPMC if not the BoC. It is known that the printing companies might develop things that are related to the bank notes and which are not commissioned by the Bank of Canada as such and therefore were never a property of Bank of Canada. To provide any description that suggests this is something official approved by Bank of Canada IMHO would be considered improper practices - PCGS or anyone else. I think someone owes the numismatic community a disclosure about the research.

The BOC is very strict on their notes and trials and such items, I was kind of surprised the BOC didn't ask Heritage to pull the two proof and essay from this years FUN sale. Also they believe almost anything that escapes still are their property, so asking them for info is almost impossible, but if you collect these things this looks exactly like a BOC prototype design product. There is a really cool De La Rue Canada 125 dollar note with BOC security strips that was purposed for Canada's 125 birthday, would have been really cool to been issued but to get info on this is near impossible also very hard to find in the market place, NGC has pics on their forum, apparently there are 6 different versions, what's cool is the BOC security strip and of course the amount 125 dollar

I agree with John , it is almost impossible to have information ,on trial pieces, neither from BOC or the printer company. It seems that for old series 35-37-54-86 BOC are not looking for those notes because they are no security issues.

All the 1967 double/triple struck coins This looks like an actual part of the process.
