I've been trying for that same two hours, yet all I get is "Web site not responding due to a broken or busy server."

For some reason or another these coins absolutely DO NOT appeal to me? Maybe its the full set of Franklins I already own or the extra'a I have tucked back for ND's prediction? This is really pretty bad as I bought the Marshall commemoratives last year but I think that was strictly because I knew most collectors WOULD NOT! Not very many of those uncs went out the Mint's door so it may turn out to be a real good decision?

I like the reverse of the "founding father" but ordered both to along with the set of Franklin half dollars I'm working on. I didn't order a chronic set but now I'm wondering whether that was a wise decision. There will be 55,000 sets. Should I? Comments pls!! Terry, do you really think the Marshall Comm will increase? I feel like its already droping.

Shatsi, Give the uncirculated version of the John Marshall a few years to mature and then a whole new generation of commemorative collectors will see that only 49,553 were sold? The proofs topped out at 141,000 if I remember correctly so the uncs, if there is a winner, will be the one to own. Anytime an undesirable coin is released, well sadly to say, thats the ones to buy if you are interested in increasing values! Time will tell but I will say when I do buy commemoratives I ALWAYS buy both unc. and proof! That way I am covered!

The last two or three times I tried to order from the mint, I received a message about "problems" they were having. So, in each case, I picked up the phone and had no problem ordering. Either they get to the point where they don't want to accept on-line orders, or perhaps they need to up-date their systems.

Does anyone know what the individual mintages are for the proof and unc?

The mint site says orders has been taken to fulfill the authorised mintage except for the 50,000 proof founding father commem they're saving for the Legacy set. They're taking stand by orders like they did for the Marine Co.

I liked Franklin with a kite in his hand. Whats the story of; "join or die"?

Oh man, I hope Dad got our order in! He was gonna place it today, have to check with him to see if he had any luck. He's getting both coins, I'm getting the one with the snake on the back. The "Join or Die" has to do with the Revolutionary War, something to do with the colonies having to come together or lose the war. I'm sure some of our history buffs will have a better explanation than that, but it's a start! Rachel [:p]

The severed snake represents Franklin's belief that colonial unity is a matter of life and death, "Join, or Die."

sold out at the mint This is Benjamin Franklin's 1754 cartoon emphasizing the need for the various colonies and regions to work together. While this became a potent message during the revolutionary period of the 1770s, the cartoon was actually intended to unite colonists against the Indian threat. I found this on the net. This cartoon shows a snake cut into eight pieces, each labeled with the name of one of the colonies. The position of each colony in the snake corresponds to the geographic position of the colonies along the American coast, with the snake's tail pointing south and the head pointing north. The colonies, from tail to head (south to north), are: South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and New England (New England refered to the colonies of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire). The caption reads, "JOIN, or DIE." The cartoon appeared along with Franklin's editorial about the "disunited state" of the colonies, and helped make his point about the importance of colonial unity. At the time, there was a superstition that a snake which had been cut into pieces would come back to life if the pieces were put together before sunset.
