I was wondering what it is called when the MD takes off the copper coating. Thank you.

Yes MD in some cases can cause the plating to split ie split plate doubling. The fact that proofs are struck twice doesn't help the situation.

Edit: It doesn't help that the zinc core is a soft metal, the pressure used to strike proofs is much higher then that of BS coins. If the pressure is too great that can cause plating or planchet cracks.

Split Plate Doubling, very common issue on the Copper plated Zinc planchets.

They try to avoid the problem on the proofs by giving the planchets a double thickness copper plating but it still happens.
