Yes MD in some cases can cause the plating to split ie split plate doubling. The fact that proofs are struck twice doesn't help the situation.
Edit: It doesn't help that the zinc core is a soft metal, the pressure used to strike proofs is much higher then that of BS coins. If the pressure is too great that can cause plating or planchet cracks.
