Hello, let me first premise by stating that, although I am just an amateur collector, I have a keen eye for finding one of a kind ' PMD' coins, it is a natural gift. So I have another contender that I would like to get some input on here, please and thank you.
In my Indian Heads cents stash, I nearly overlooked this coin. It is an 1884 Indian Head cent I got in a lot. It is shiny gold in color, and I can't tell if it is coated or solid in gold. It weighs 2.77 grams. It is very worn, no "liberty" and worn in all the other major details that determine the grade, I think that is accurate for me to say. The reverse has some 'crud' on the surface or it is actually a different metal that is being exposed.
I'm happy to hear from you, thanks.

I agree with @john1 that it could be varnish but also could be gold plating. For sure not a pure gold off-metal mint error. You could give it a soak in acetone to see what happens.

Could also be brass plated. It was a common high school science experiment back in the day to plate copper cents with a variety of metals.

When the time comes, put it in your will that the heirs have to slab your collection with a distinctive label - I'm sure ANACS will do it - "The NovelHunter PMD Collection"... I'm down for a parking lot quarter...

Thank you for all your answers and ideas as to how this coin came about this way. Another ' PMD' winner here! I still love this coin for its uniqueness and will treasure it always. I think I will spare my heirs the disappointment though and make sure to keep my ' PMD's separate from my other coins which I'm hoping they will appreciate someday!
