That's called Post Strike Damage ( PSD). There's absolutely no way that happened at the U.S. Mint. It doesn't work that way.
Errers and Varietys.

I figured thanks, I'll keep thinking it's a broad strike with a dropped letter maybe it'll come true, ended up with 400 acid washed dates and they're hideous

Here is an overlay: So to tell for sure what area the 'R' would be affected on the reverse, the AMER on AMERICA would be affected. When you look at that area on the reverse, you can see where the rim is bent outwards on that area. So the coin is damaged. The date area does look like a nick-a-date issue. So you just have a damage missing date nickel with a 'S' mint mark. No proof of a 1918. That is what I see on your coin. There were no proof nickels that year. The matte proof nickels were Philly nickels.

Thanks coop, still learning how to take pictures of coins it's seemingly an art of its own, I can make out the date on the coin, but what's the point when it looks so terrible. That was helpful I thought if anything it was someone hammering away, atleast it's due to another coin

People still buy undated nickels. They use them on jewelry and belts and stuff. A true collector would pass. There is only one year you could be sure it is a certain date. That would be the type one 1913 mound type.

Yeah, It's upsetting to see little pieces of history trashed just to sell, came across a good deal when I started and always wondered about that one. I'll probably hand them out to friends

Good choice. You may spark the collecting bug in a new collector, or it will end up at the candy store.
