Ohio man buys new truck with coins - thousands of them
21 commentsAug. 13, 2008 06:52 AM
Associated Press
CINCINNATI - An Ohio man who says he doesn't trust paper money has delivered enough coins to cover half the price of a brand new pickup truck.

Employees at a dealership in the Cincinnati suburb of Springdale say 70-year-old James Jones plunked down 16 coffee cans full of coins Tuesday for a new Chevrolet Silverado.

Salesman David Crisswell says employees spent 90 minutes counting the collection of dimes, quarters, half-dollars and dollar coins, which covered half the $16,000 price of the pickup.
Jones and his wife, Betty, wrote a check for the other half of the cost.

Jones' son says his dad has always preferred to pay with coins. Dennis Jones says he's most amazed that his penny-pinching father decided to replace his 1981 pickup, which struck his father when its parking brake failed last year, putting him in a hospital.

Heh, I bet that the car dealers were thrilled when they saw him start to count out change for the car.

I thought about dong that for a speeding ticket but decided against it. I wonder if one bank had $800 worth of pennies or if he had to go to multiple.

There's no law that says you can't.

It IS legal money after all, why not?

Are cents legal tender for any amount? I thought there was a limit on the amount.

Yes you can pay for anything with coins of any denomiation. However, some institues will make you pay a percent for a counting fee. Some banks around me charge you 10% for any coins over $100. Here in Illinois people hate toll boths so much that many pay in pennies just to tie up their machinery. The state doesn't care as long as you pay, pay, pay. Some years back there was a restaurant I went to. The service was really bad so every time I went there I left a tip in pennies. One day I noticed the service was many times better. When leaving a waitress said thanks for all the coins. We always need them at the cash register.
It seams the more I try to do things like that, I help people out. But buying a car or truck sure sounds like fun. If it was me doing that, the dealer would say hey look here, it's a 1909S VDB in this change.
