For the life of me I cannot figure out why someone would copper plate a completely nothing of a 1972 D LMC. I have seen gold plated coins, silver plated coins and copper plated 1943 steel cents. This one is a first time to see a copper plated copper cent. Its weight is 3.07 grams.

Looks like they didn't clean the surface prior to their plating attempt. I too for the life of me can't fathom why they'd plate it. Could have been some kids goofing off in science class.
Check out my counterstamped Lincoln Cent collection:

I'm thinking it looks plated covered with something foreign. Maybe something similar to Pepsi cola? Not copper. Thanks, Doug.

Perhaps some chemical substance just ate away at the toning on the reverse.
