I haven't studied this series enough to know what to look for. I have heard some dealers making a big deal about the "L" on the ribbon before. So is this only pertaining to the 1864? Is the "L" on all IHCs?

Longacre's initial was added late in the year of 1864, therefore most 1864 IHC's do not have the "L" thus making a 1864 IHC with the "L" slightly more rare. all IHC's after 1864 have the "L".

Below is a link to some info about the 1864-L and some pretty pictures. The L variety is quite a bit more valuable than the non-L.

You can also cherrypick low grade 1864Ls by looking at the bust when the L cannot be seen
L variety- point bust
normal variety- rounded bust

my 1909 IHC in my 7070 album has a Large "L" over small "L" on its head band, there was a question about it in this thread awhile back and I showed a picture of it https://goccf.com/t/32694&whichpage...chTerms=1909
