1,290,103,904 Sacagawea dollars were minted in 2000 and millions more were made in other years. I was just wondering, with the large number of them that have been produced does anyone ever get them in change?

A resounding NO. I've seen people spend them but not many. And I've never gotten any in my change. As long as there is a choice of a dollar coin or a dollar note the note will win every time. The coin will NOT work until the green back is pulled from circulation.

I seem to remember years ago that post office's stamp vending machines that took them ( and back for change ). I don't know if the government still tries to give them a boost like that.

You have to ask for them as change. I have had tellers tell me that they just hold any they get and turn them in to the bank because most people don't want them as change. The same goes for other dollar coins, half dollars, and $2 bills. They will also hold old notes to turn in, like a silver certificate. Specifically ask for them as change. I do this at the place where I buy gas and they usually have some dollar coins they are happy to exchange for "regular" money.
Also, some state buildings will have machines were you get them as change from bills, so they can be used in the drink and snack machines. Unless they are specifically disabled to take them, all modern snack and drink machines will take dollar coins.

Most are sitting in vaults or got shipped to Latin America where people actually use them.
Banks have to specifically order them - they don't get them automatically from the FED, and won't give them out unless customers request them, which is rare. I banked with Bank of America from about 2007-2012; they were required to keep at least a partial box on hand due to company policy. I switched to Suntrust in 2012, and they rarely had any at all. The only time I ever got them in change was from a machine.

If you are somewhere that you think dollar coins may be used in the snack or drink machines, put a dollar in and wait for it to register the dollar credit, then push in the change return button. If there is a dollar coin in the machine, you will get that as your dollar back; otherwise, you'll get regular change back.

Never received one for change. Though I must confess on not using cash very often.
My friends and I use them all the time in our monthly poker game. They've become the norm rather that the exception.

I seldom see them, even when I ask. The dollar coin has been an epic failure and is doomed to remain one as long as the dollar bill circulates alongside it.

I do not remember ever getting a SAC in change, but I used to spend the rejects from roll hunting them. I do remember getting a SBA in change as a quarter once a long time ago. John1

The public transportation vending machines in L.A. give them out in change. Problem is, no one in L.A uses public transportation.

Otto, I remember the stamp vending machines that used to give dollar coins as change. I one time found an Anthony Dollar someone left in the change slot.
