Any suggestions on how to go about this hunt? 1. Change from shopping? 2. Buy a box from a bank? 3. Buy customer rolls at the bank? 4. ?

I'd say change from shopping and maybe some boxes from the bank.

Sounds like a hoax to me. Just trying to get attention. But I'll be here to help those new ones when they come in to ID what they have found.

I read about this a month or so ago. It is not a hoax, at all. But, it's also not an opportunity for collector members of this forum to benefit. Those here most likely know what to look for or know what references to search if in doubt. The purpose of this is to introduce coin collecting as a hobby to the masses (circulation). It's about the child finding an IHC or Buffalo in change and sparking an interest. It's about adults finding a Wheat cent and it bringing back memories of their parents. So, if anything, CCF members should be releasing coins into circulation, not gathering them. They aren't special to me, but I can spend quite a few Wheaties this month. Who knows where those may end up and who may be sparked by that? That's the point.

COINWEEK Quote:Goals: Inspire a new generation of coin collectors and dealers. From kids to adults, we will make searching your coins fun again. Increase traffic to local Mom and Pop coin shops. To gain national media attention to our hobby and profession. I have been CRH for about 2 years maybe. The coins posted here are what I find. And I don't think "new generation" coin collectors or dealers will find or even notice: 1. RPMs 2. DD 3. Die cracks "New generation" might be curious about a buffalo or mercury or the such. An average bank cent box contain about 3 - 10 Wheaties (guessing average). Since I have been coin roll hunting CENTS for the past 4-5 months or so, I have been to my local coin shop 3 times and for the first time ever I have a coin at PCGS. That would not have happened if I wasn't coin roll hunting. Maybe I still fall under "New Gereration" ( I don't feel BU). But how about this I will drop a 1909 vdb that I got from a bank box. It aint the greatest of shape but I kept it. SO, DO I STOP CRH FOR THAT WEEK? (I still got 5 unsearched boxes in a closet) Just saying

No need to stop searching. BTW- What sparked your interest in CRH. Did you just wake up one day and decide to or was there something you heard or read that got you interested? It's great you'll set that '09 back into the wild to maybe get somebody else's interest. Great idea.
But it's not intended for us but to help the hobby as mentioned. Remember the talk and attention when someone drops a gold coin in the kettle at Christmas, or another 1943 copper is sold or someone finds another 1969s DDO-001 while roll searching? It's all about the verbal buzz. It is intended to create that buzz and get people talking around the water cooler so to speak about the hobby enough to maybe see what it's all about. I've strictly a collector but have loved getting back into the hobby 6 years ago.It is people like the experienced collectors here that have made it so enjoyable. They give so much of their time and experience and hopefully get some enjoyment themselves from helping others.
I worked out a deal with a local sub shop I frequent. They only go through $3-$5 worth of cents each week. I'm selling them $10 worth of wheats at face value to give as change for cash customers. During that week they will also place a sign in their windows telling the customers to be sure to check their change for surprises. Most people use plastic, myself included, but it will be interesting to see if they go through more cents than usual during the week. I thinking of giving them some Merc dimes as well. Everybody notices Merc dimes when they see one, even young store clercs. I even talked to a local weekly paper about the Great American Coin Hunt and plan on filling them in on my plan with the sub shop as well. It's not much and could easily be a flop, but it costs so little, is a way to "pay it forward" and it is a positive step for the hobby. Hope more will join the effort.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups. We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.

Hello Petespockets55. I use to collect when I was 10 - 12 for a bit. Buffalo nickels back then were plentiful. I didn't have much but what I did have I kept in a metal Band-Aid can. Then when I was 25 or so I picked it back up for about 10 years. I had a Peace dollar collection all graded PCGS MS63 or better except for 1 NGC. I should have kept it. I sold most of my coins and got into the stock market. Now another 20 years later here I go again. This time I started CRH for silver in half dollar rolls. Silver became more scarce in CRH halves so I started coin roll hunting cents. A have this insane idea to flip cents for silver... Now I just want to start a coin collection again and this time cents instead of dollars. On a fixed budget so it makes sense. I do agree with "BUZZ". Last night I sent an email to friends and family about The National Coin Week. BTW, hasn't every hunter found a cull? I think as numismatists we should try and preserve coins. Recently I found CRH 1983D LMC WDDO-002 ear I would rather have someone else find it maybe 10 years earlier. If you look at my post on it you will know why. Thanks for the convo. It is time.. to go back to CRH
