Wow. It almost looks like flat black spray paint. Especially the reverse.

Yes that's terminal. Generally the only way it got like this is in a fire or buried in acidic soil. But this looks like a fire coin
Rest in Peace

This coin has gone past the terminal stage for toning.
Terminal natural toning for modern coins normally presents a flat gray color.

The only normal instances where I have seen black coins, is when I see heavily black patinated ancient bronze coins. Most have been recovered from soil burial, and often present with mild pitting.

I think that the coin pictured has been subjected to heat damage.

http://www.jhonecash.com/research/s...fication.asp thank you @sel_69l and @CelticKnot I was just trying to learn about toning and according tho this site toning naturally progresses to black which is then named terminal.

Possibly the Mint was experimenting with clay for coins.

Thanks for the reference and links, ccobb! By the way your jhonecash link is broken (however if I drill down into the CCF article you cited, [i/]that[/i] jhonescash link works.

It makes sense. So "terminal" here is meant to indicate that toning has stopped and will not progress any further. Not that it's been hooked up to a battery terminal to create the toning or found in a train station.

@CelticKnot thank you for the kind response! and yes that was my understanding also. I knew the link was broken but I didn't know how to fix it. I'm coin illiterate and computer illiterate as well ! I had to get a teenager to show me how to copy and paste the link! LOL
