Gold fanam from India, ca. 1700s. There are a lot of fakes about, but thankfully the fakes are usually made of melted down sovereigns - I treat them like Maria Theresa thalers - treat them as bullion, not necessarily numismatic collectibles.

Finn235 In a collection I purchased about 1970 came a group of between 20 and 30 varieties of the "gold" fanam. I was curious enough about counterfeits to check these very closely. Most were counterfeit - but only some of the counterfeits were actually solid gold. There were even back in 1970 gold plated silver forgeries of these tiny coins.

Personally I avoid them like I avoid the Maximillian Gold Pesos of 1865. Too many silver copies to justify the prices demanded for gold.
