Just wondering how many people are collecting these coins? Whether they are Silver Eagles, Gold Eagles or any other coin with this designation. If you are collecting them why? If not why not?
My second part of this question is does anyone have any idea what the percentage of coins getting submitted to the grading services achieve the MS70, PF 70 grade. What percent make the MS-69 grade, PR 69 grade?

First day of issue is just another gimmick to create artificial rarity. The major TPG have databases where you can get thye info on distributions by grade.

As biggfredd said, it is just a marketing gimmick and nothing more. Just becuase a coin was sold on the first day available, that does not mean it was one of the first to be minted. The US Mint does not track coinage emmission from a particular set of dies and dies are changed after a few thousand of strikes(much higher for circulating coinage) so "first strikes" are constantly produced throughout the year. Visit the US Mint website to see what they have to say on the matter- http://www.usmint.gov/consumer/inde...#firstStrikeFor the second part of the question, the Silver/Gold Eagles have very high numbers of 69s and 70s. You should expect a minimum of 67 for the vast majority of them. These coins receive very careful handling and are not treated the same way as circulating coinage. Circulating coinage is an entirely different manner and you are lucky if you find one over MS65 these days.

I don't collect them. The Early releases are nothing special since they can be up to the first six MONTHS worth of production. Hardly anything to get excited about especially since if it wasn't for the holder there would be absolutely no way to tell them from a coin that wasn't an "early release". First day of issue is slightly more interesting since the time window is so much smaller but they are still absolutely no different from any other coin of the same issue. And most importantly because most of my interest in coins is in 18th and 19th century coins, and mainly in copper coins. Quote:The major TPG have databases where you can get thye info on distributions by grade. On distribution maybe, but not on percentages because we don't know how many were sent in but not slabbed because they didn't grade high enough to please the submitter.

The Mint does the "First Day Issue" Pres. Dollars and SHQ's........no value to this. I got a few of the lower mintage State Qtrs. "1st Day Coin Covers".....comes with a stamp too.....but certainly not because I thought i'd get rich someday !.......just wanted a few of them....and they may carry a slight premium in 30 years.... But the private coin companies that advertise and try to sell you "Early Releases" are full of gobblygook !!.....

What got me thinking about this issue is I got a sales flier from a coin dealer yesterday in the mail. Inside he was pitching his early release and first day issue Buffalo Gold Coins. Basically what he was saying is hurry up and buy these coins now because they are getting scarce. So as a matter of fact after Aug 25Th there will be a huge markup in price on these items. If I remember right he was asking like $1500 for a 1 ounce Gold Eagle Pr 70. It just seemed to me with the price of gold down. There must be a little bit of downward price pressure on these coins.
So I was just interested in what people on this board thought about them.
Thanks

Gold may be down and I've seen the 08 buffalo 1 oz. for less than $1200 in pr70 deep cam. Unfortunately I don't see much price reduction on these coins when the melt price goes down, but an increase when the price goes up. I have a few FDOI and ER coins. My President dollars are whats called first strike, whatever that means. I have 2, 1 ounce gold eagles dated 1997 that are not graded but are in plastic envelopes, I can't find a listing for these coins anywhere and other than their melt value I'm not sure they have any other value? I guess they're just 1 oz. gold coins worth whatever the current melt price is.
