One of our members got a "First Discovery" certification from PCGS for an MS65 2019-W Lowell Quarter. The other one (MS66) is now listed at Great Collections. With 12 days to go, bids are up to $1650. https://www.greatcollections.com/Co...2-PCGS-MS-66

I wouldn't buy it personally at that price, but it may well turn out to be a good investment for whoever buys it.

Hmm.... that MS 65 from the guy here looks better than this MS66 to me. white spots, lots of scratches, something funny going on with the "B" in liberty.
Must be favoritism at PCGS or something....

I don't collect these, but I'm assuming these will be mass produced with a capital "MASS." If that is the case, the name recognition is wonderful, but I'd sell it in a heartbeat before the market gets flooded.

$3000 now all because of a slab and a label!
Is this a great country or what?

Still going with "Buy the coin, not the label". However, outside of the "first coin" hysteria, if I can't find one in the wild, I'll pay a few bucks on ebay in a few months. Will look enthusiastically in the wild, though!

No worse than an IPO on the stock market.

Quote: I'd be willing to pay $5. You see I got this guy who specializes in W minted quarters. Let me go give him a call. Quote: Must be favoritism at PCGS or something. I agree completely. Quote: (this auction is for the finer of the two coins Since they are only auctioning one of the two it certainly seems like favoritism to me. If I had the other I would be upset that they are not selling my coin. Once the coin is sold it it will not bring as much as this coin did/does since it will be considered the second sold and not the first. Since they have devalued the second coin I wonder if the owner has any legal recourse against them. They should have auctioned them both at the same time or not at all.

Quote: Since they are only auctioning one of the two it certainly seems like favoritism to me. As far as we know, they have only one of the two "First Discovery" coins. The other may well be in the hands of the CCF member who found it. And since the one that's not up for sale was graded MS65, "finer of the two" is a perfectly accurate description. It's interesting that I often see "history" as a common factor in collecting older coins ("Imagine how these changed hands back in the day..."), but this one's pedigree carries its own history: these coins with relatively low mintage were released into circulation with very little notice, people hunted for them, and these two were the first ones received by PCGS on the same day. Like it or not, that's a piece of history right there. And someone (who isn't me) is apparently willing to pay over $3000 for it.
