Here is my first IHC purchase. I will post the grade that the seller sold it as to use as a comparison as to what the members of CC think. Thanks.

It's kinda hard to tell from the pics, but is that a ding on the "U" on the obverse? That and slight wear in the tips of the top three feathers would make me lean towards an AU grade...like maybe AU-53? The diamonds look to be slightly worn as well, but again that could be just from the picture.

The U does look weird in the picture. But it isn't dented. It's just that that particular section of the U isn't as dark as rest of the U or the letters for that matter. The picture just exaggerates it.

I will say AU55-58. It might be higher, but the pictures don't show enough detail. The coin, as pictured, appears to have very slight wear on some feathers and the reverse appears to have slight wear on the leaves. Sometimes, this could be due to weak strike from a die that is wearing out, so if that is the case, this could get an MS grade.

I agree on the AU55 range, probably sold as MS though, could be I do not know about weak strikes on these.

Wow. Everybody's guesses are higher than expected. I bought it at AU-50 for about $5. Was this a fair price? Thanks.

with mycrob. this IHC is very close to MS (AU55 min.) and with the pic focus being slightly off it's difficult to call. overall this is a nice example; very few marks (not counting the "U" distortion) and even toning qualifies as "eye appeal". Welcome to the wonderful world of Indian Head cents. I would say $5 was a very good price. Retail approx. $20-25

Awesome. It was one of the coins that was going off at a weird time during the middle of the night. I'll have to say I like the luster on these dark tone cents much more than the vibrant Morgans. There's something I like about them.

Matt check out rick snow's website at Indiancent.com, he has great grading info with excellent pics and lots of examples to look at. I also like the way copper tones naturally. beware of bright orange cents.......... I learned the hard way . This series also has lots of varieties to pursue, not to mention the history involved from 1859 - 1909 .

I have been looking at the site you linked me too for a good while now. That grading information is exceptional. There is a lot of good history and informative information on there. Great link.
