I found this controversial 1987 D LMC with the mintmark of the MMS-012 which was intended for use on the 1988 and 1989 LMC's. The actual mintmark was suppose to be the MMS-011. I decided to email pics to Dr. James Wiles and in his reply email and he congratulated me on the find and also said that it is a transitional mintmark variety. I have seven of these and this is by far the nicest one that I have or have seen, most are pretty rough thanks to being a zincoln. Anyway, I haven't posted in a while and this is my find of the day.

They probably are common. Just that no one noticed them before.

These are actually not hard to find. I have a bin that I throw all of my nice looking coins in and sort them by date. A couple of months ago here on the forum there was a thread about them. I went through a few of the 1987 Denver coins that I had. I pulled out six of the MMS-012 mintmarks and gave up looking through the rest. They are easy to tell apart when looking at them with the camera set up on the microscope. I set up a the exposure box to the size of the mintmark and then just positioned the mintmark within the box on the computer monitor. You can tell instantly which mint mark style it is. If you want one E&V send me an email. Still Lookin
