Latest purchase... Maximinus I Denarius. AD 235-238...3.18gr IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG, laureate, draped bust right. FIDES MILITVM, Fides standing left, a standard in each hand. RIC 7A Minted AD 235-236 An interesting Emperor of Thraco-Roman descent who elevated himself to eventual power via a military career commencing as a common soldier, moving up through the ranks, until finally commanding the 'Legio IV Italica'. This was undoubtably aided by his supposed frightening physical appearance and colossal size. He was a Barracks Emperor (seizing power by virtue of his command of the army) in AD235, this being the start of the crisis of the 3rd century. He was the first Roman emperor to never set foot inside Rome...Well technically his head did, on a pole, after his assasination by his own troops in AD238.  |

Very nice example. The chin looks like it was added right at the end of the process - perhaps they werent happy with how prominent it was!
It's always interesting to see a FIDES MILITVM type for an emperor killed by his own troops - loyalty was fleeting in Rome (or maybe wishful thinking was rampant at the mint).

Super example! His coins are some of my favorite from the whole third century, always exceptionally well made and usually in great condition - and they don't break the banks!

Thanks guys! Seem to remember reading somewhere that the average height of a Roman around this time was 1,56cm. He's been described as being 8ft plus probably a serious exaggeration but even a mid to late 6 footer would have, lets say, 'Stood out'! Also I think this Emperor was a bit of a liar in his time.. Maximinus or "Big Max" was the Emperor of Rome from AD 235 to AD 238. He was supposedly over eight feet tall and was a former wrestler. His reign ended the usual way for a Roman Emperor, he was murdered.
